User Profile Workflow

Hi all,
I seem to be having trouble attaching workflow to some user profile fields. What i want, for example, is for some fields to need to be approved by the manager before they are saved. i.e joe bloggs edits his profile and tries to update his staff id, then an email get emailed to his manager to deny or approve this change.
I cant see how to do this in central admin, and i cant seem to find any resources on the web about this? I assume it requires custom code, possibly overriding the Save Profile method?
Any help would be much appreciated :)
