on windows xp,You are prompted to enter your credentials when you access an sharepoint site

This is a 2 part answer.
1) Make sure that the site is in their trusted list in their IE settings.
2) Make sure the following is checked:
Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Custom Level > User Authentication > Logon > Automatic logon with current user name and password.
